When you consider visiting a national park in winter, Death Valley’s intriguing name might conjure up an assortment of thoughts and emotions, including excitement, intrigue and a tingle of apprehension. So, what does the windswept desert landscape offer?

The largest national park in the lower 48 of the US, Death Valley National Park, is a truly remarkable place to visit. The wild and almost unearthly geography instils awe-inspiring respect for nature and provides an exciting voyage of discovery.

Death Valley gained its grisly name from a group of prospectors, The Lost 49ers, who embarked on an ill-fated shortcut that took them across Death Valley. Only when they finally discovered a route out of the valley. One group member turned back to the brutal landscape and said, ‘ Goodbye, Death Valley.’ They all thought it would be their grave.

Death Valley is renowned for its blistering heat and is the hottest place on earth. However, how about in winter? Does the weather remain sizzling in Death Valley National park in winter?

Here at My Green Tent, we continue our National Park in winter series to help with your all-year-round enjoyment of the great outdoors.

The park sits in the rain shadow of four mountain ranges. Two are the Panamint to the west and the Amargosa to the east. These mountains protect Death Valley, keeping it dry. Sunrise and Sunsets

Death Valley National Park’s imposing landscapes provide unique canvases for spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

East of Stovepipe Wells is an easy to moderate walk into the dunes. It takes roughly a 1.5 hours round trip and is about 2 miles long.

Named after the trees that grow in the area, the dunes are famous for their dramatic shadows at sunset and sunrise. They provide a fantastic place to spot local wildlife.

Badwater Basin

Perhaps one of the most famous locations in Death Valley. It formed tens of thousands of years ago when a lake evaporated.

Badwater Basin gained its name after the mule of a settler refused to drink from the spring in the area. The water was, in fact, high in salt rather than bad.

The 200 sq miles of salt flats lie 282ft below sea level. These incredible salt flats are a must-see with the backdrop of the Panamint mountain range, including the Telescope peak, standing an impressive two miles above. This is one of the most dramatic changes in height in the US.

Racetrack Playa

A bizarre phenomenon of large rocks moving across the flats, leaving tracks of their route. No footsteps or animal tracks give clues to how they move. Some stones weigh 700lb and have moved 1500ft.

Researchers in 2014 believed they had solved the mystery of this peculiar event. They thought it a rare combination, where ice on cold winter nights formed under the stones. The wind slowly pushes the rocks before the ice melts the following morning.

Maybe the researchers are right, or perhaps they are wrong. The intrigue of the moving rocks remains.

Charcoal Kilns and Harmony Borax Works

Both sites show some of the histories of the park.  The bee-hive domes of the charcoal kilns in Wildrose Canyon are well preserved and stand 25ft tall. They made fuel for the smelting pots of the nearby mines.

Harmony Borax’s Works became famous for using large mule trains to transport the ore for processing. You can still see some of the wagons today.

Hiking to Stunning Geological Points

The mind-blowing geography of Death Valley National Park enables unique photography in every direction creating memories to last a lifetime.

Visit Dantes Peak and look out over the enormity of Death Valley.

Or hike further to Ubehebe Crater. The enormous volcanic crater is 600ft deep and half a mile wide. If you prefer to drive, the car park provides a view over the entire crater.

what to do in death valley during the winter

Other attractions include Devils Golf Course, Artists Palette, backcountry driving or guided tours.

Death Valley National Park is vast and varied, providing endless opportunities to see incredible wildlife and scenery. Visit the NPS things to do page for more ideas about what the park offers.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Death Valley National Park?

The extreme summer conditions in Death Valley can make the answer to this question seem straightforward.

Winter and fall are the most suited for an enjoyable and comfortable trip if avoiding crowds and blazing heat are high on the agenda.

The camping season and ranger programmes start in the fall. The second week in November is popular because of the lost 49ers’ encampment.

Summer months are popular with visitors exploring the park by car. However, visitors in summer are primarily foreign tourists. Park authorities advise avoiding hiking in the summer months.

Most visitors arrive in spring, hoping to catch the wildflower bloom. It transforms the valley floor into a sea of wildflowers. Spring break brings tourists, and campgrounds are generally full, so it is advisable to reserve in advance.

Final Thoughts

Death Valley National Park’s remarkable, beautiful landscape and immense size provide heaps to do. It is not ‘if’ you visit but more ‘when’ you visit and how long you can stay. Death Valley National Park in winter has the weather, the solitude, and the scenery. Fascinating history, incredible wildlife and unique wildflowers make Death Valley much more than a grisly name. Always consider safety when visiting the park, as it is probably unlike anywhere you have seen.

Respect the rules of the park and have a great visit.

Utah is a mecca for outdoor activities and is home to five incredible national parks known as ‘The Mighty Five.’ The parks are massive in scale, covering thousands of miles. It is a spectacular landscape which is on many adventurers’ to-do lists. Capitol Reef is one of the ‘Mighty.’ It is one of the least visited of the five. In 2021 Capitol Reef celebrated 50 years of being a national park. You can drive through the park’s heart and experience the unique Waterpocket Fold, a geological wrinkle in the earth. Take a hike and delve deeper into the rugged scenery of high desert, canyons, and white domes. The area experiences four distinct seasons. So what is it like in Capitol Reef National Park in winter?

Is Capitol Reef National Park Open in Winter?

The national park lies in the south-central desert region of Utah. Capitol Reef has mild winters compared to some national parks, for example, Badlands National Park. However, with cliffs and mountains and an elevation range between 4,300 feet (1,310 metres) and 11,000 feet (3,352 metres), Capitol Reef experiences cold winters.

The park is open in winter. Along with the campgrounds, which are also open all year round.

Some of the attractions have different opening hours. For example, the visitor centre is open except for a few major holidays, and the Gifford House Store and Museum is open from March to October.

Winter opening hours, stated on the National Park Service website, are 9 am – 4 pm, seven days a week, from December 4th to March 3rd.

While the park is open in winter, some roads could be closed due to weather conditions.

You might find that some of the local restaurants and hotels close for the winter.

  • March – 16.5 inches

The weather in the park varies from hot summers to chilly winters. Temperatures can plunge from 91°F (32.7°C)  to 20°F (-6°C) in January. Day temperatures tend to stay above freezing at 41°F (5°C).

Do you need a four-wheel drive in Capitol Reef National Park?

Four-wheel drive is not essential in the national park. The main scenic route is a paved road. If road conditions are unsafe, roads will be closed.

Some unimproved roads are suitable for high-clearance vehicles, but it does not necessarily have to be four-wheel drive. Rain and snow cause the roads to become muddy. So you need to know your vehicle’s suitability and driving experience before tackling backcountry roads.

Remember, help might not arrive for a few hours or even days if you get stuck. So be prepared. The park wardens and visitor centre can offer advice on road conditions.

What To Do in Canyonlands National Park in the Winter

Years of erosion by the Green and Colorado rivers have sculpted Canyonlands National Park into the beautiful landscape it is today.

The landscape is divided into five districts. These include:

  • Island in the Sky
  • The Needles
  • The Maze
  • Horseshoe Canyon Unit
  • The rivers

All these places share the same desert-like terrain and atmospheric conditions. However, there is a variety in the activities they offer.

Now we will list our favorite things to do in Canyonlands National Park in winter. The snow-covered peaks and gorges do not mean a compromise on the adventure. So, let’s get to it!

Hiking

Canyonlands National Park has numerous hiking trails that you can embark on. Each district has its hiking trails. We prefer the ones in Island in the Sky and The Needles as they are relatively better-maintained.

However, it is worth noting that the hiking trails in Island in the Sky are strenuous. You can switch between short, moderate, and longer hiking trails based on your experience. You will see the majestic view of the canyon from above, and you can also descend halfway into the canyon or walk to the river.

As for The Needles, the hiking trails are steep and uneven. You walk through various Slickrock formations, and the hiking trails form loops here. You can also make your journey longer by combining several different treks.

The Maze is conventionally considered a backpacking destination, owing to its remote location. Moreover, we do not recommend beginners trek here as they’re not well-kept. The terrain may be too rugged and slippery if you are inexperienced.

Water in all these regions is scarce. You must bring 1L to 4 gallons of water per person, depending on the length of the trail. Drink ample water to avoid dehydration.

Camping

There are two main campgrounds in Canyonland National Park. These include Island in the Sky Campground and The Needles Campground.

One of the advantages of camping in Canyonlands National Park in winter is the easy accessibility of campsites. That is because most of them are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. The minimal travelers in winter will result in less competition.

Island in the Sky Campground, also known as Willowflat, has 12-sites. You will need to pay $15 per camping site.

The Needles Campground has 26 individual sites that cost $20 per night. There are also 3 group sites available if you want to have fun with your peers.

Campgrounds are mainly reserved throughout spring and fall when there is a large influx of tourists. Moreover, the campgrounds are well-maintained. There are toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables on both campgrounds. Be sure to bring lots of water with you, as it will be unavailable at campsites.

Backcountry in Canyonlands National Park offers opportunities for exploration and learning. That is because they’re usually uninhabited and, thus, unaltered from any human intervention.

You will require a permit for overnight stays. You can get it from the visitor center or the Backcountry Reservation Office.

There is a strategic advantage to exploring the backcountry at Canyonlands National Park in winter. You can easily get a permit during this time as opposed to the peak season in spring and fall. You must make your reservations 4 to 5 months in advance if you want to come here during peak season.

Stargazing

Did you know that you can see thousands of stars from certain places in Canyonlands National Park? That is opposed to the mere 500 visible in the average city. How incredibly spectacular is that?

canyonlands national park in the winter

Canyonlands National Park is one of the International Dark-Sky Parks. That means you can clearly see the starry night due to the pollution-free environment.

Due to the Dark Sky regulations, artificial light is restricted here. Thus, you’re free to witness the sky unveil the starry night as soon as the sun descends. We recommend this once-in-a-lifetime experience to all travelers.

However, you must protect yourself from the cold, as the nights can be freezing in Canyonlands National Park in winter. Make sure to go through our list of travel essentials to help defend yourself from the cold.

River trips

How can you leave the captivating Canyonlands National Park without seeing the main reason for its origin: the river. While white water rafting may not always be available, depending on the season, there is another option. Local guides sometimes offer slow and steady boat rides down the river. These are very calming. Just sit back and observe the wildlife and plants as they pass by.

Travel essentials:

  • Bring a flashlight or camping lantern to brighten up the dark areas during camping. It helps during overnight stays in the backcountry as well.
  • A First Aid Kit is important during travel. Being prepared will help you remain calm in the unfortunate scenario of someone getting injured.
  • Water is a scarce resource at Canyonlands National Park. Bring a considerable amount with you to avoid dehydration.
  • A lightweight and spacious backpack is important to carry all your essentials. We recommend the Maelstrom Hiking Backpack as it is lightweight and waterproof.
  • There are no phone signals at Canyonlands National Park. Bring a compass for assistance in navigation.
  • Bring extra warm clothing to protect yourself against the cold. Make sure to wash them properly if required.
  • Outdoor activities can be strenuous. Bring high-energy food for nourishment. Chocolate bars are an excellent choice due to their high caloric value.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent sprays are also essential during travel. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you won’t get sunburned.

What Is the Best Time of Year To Visit Canyonlands National Park?

There is no fixed approach for determining the best time to visit Canyonlands National Park. However, most people prefer spring or fall because of the mild and tolerable weather conditions. You don’t have to worry about feeling too hot or too cold. Moreover, a lot of places are open for exploration. The operating hours of the visitor center are also increased during this time.

However, this is peak season which means a substantial influx of travelers. That can be a problem if you do not like spending time in large crowds. Permits for hiking, camping, and exploring the backcountry also get highly competitive. You may be unable to obtain them due to the high demand and limited permits available.

Final Thoughts

Canyonlands National Park is open all year for tourists from around the world. You can visit it anytime you want. However, if you prefer solitude and do not mind freezing atmospheric conditions, Canyonlands National Park in winter is truly a sight to behold. Moreover, you won’t have to worry about getting permits, which can be a hassle during spring or fall.

However, in retrospect, spring and fall are peak seasons for a reason. The weather conditions are comparatively tolerable. And you can explore many roads and sites unavailable in wintertime.

Do not forget the travel essentials for whichever month you visit here. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you won’t regret it!

Instant tents, sometimes known as ‘pop-up’ tents, are great tents if you want something simple to put up without messing around. Smaller instant tents can be up and ready to go in seconds, and larger tents can take just under a minute. You will spend less time untangling guy ropes and matching color-coded tent poles and more time exploring or sitting around the campfire. To find out more about what an instant tent is, read on and we’ll explain how they work and the advantages (and possibly a few disadvantages) of instant tents.

How Does An Instant Tent Work?

An instant tent’s fast action in the set-up process makes it ideal for those who do not relish the idea of setting up camp or those who have little time and want a tent that is simple and speedy to pitch.

A pop-up tent does just that. It pops up. You open the bag, shake out the tent, and it bursts into a tent shape. Instant tents have spring-loaded poles fitted to the tent. The straps or bag keep the tent folded and pre-attached poles compressed.

Stowing away a tent can take a bit longer, but it is possible to complete the task in under two minutes. Packing away tends to be a bit of an art, but the job is easy once you have it mastered. For tips on how to put away a popup tent, check out Regatta.

The above method works for small popup tents. Larger instant tents have pre-attached poles, which are unfolded and extended. The tent pops into shape as the poles are pushed up and secured. The tent is still easily assembled in under a minute.

Two Main Instant Tent Styles

Dome Tent

A dome tent is a tent with sloping sides that meet on a ridge or point at the top of the tent. The principle behind the shape is to cope with more extreme weather conditions. And have excellent stability in wind.

Cabin Tent

A Cabin Tent has straighter sides and looks like a box. They are spacious and work great for families, especially if it is raining and you want to stay inside. However, the box-like shape means they are not aerodynamic and do not stand up well in windy conditions, so they are often used as a two-season tent.

Do You Need To Use Tent Pegs?

Instant tents are popular for those who want an easy outdoor solution for somewhere to sleep, such as being at a festival. It might still be necessary to peg a tent to the ground. Instant tents are lightweight and great for pop-up success.

To make the structure of an instant tent, pegging out is unnecessary. However, pop-ups do not handle rain and wind the same way a standard tent would. So, to prevent your pop-up tent from blowing away, pegging it down is essential. If there is no wind, you might get away from using pegs. Or, if you plan to climb into your tent straightaway or pile some of your gear inside, you should be okay. However, with even a gentle breeze, it is advisable to use pegs.

Do You Need To Use Guy Ropes?

Instant tents are freestanding, but it is best to use the guy ropes when it rains or is windy. You might find in the wind that the top of the tent folds in and, on a smaller pop-up, hit you in the face. An instant tent will get more stability from guy ropes, supporting the tent in keeping its shape.

Can One Person Put Up An Instant Tent?

Now that you know what is an instant tent, you might wonder if you could go solo camping and pitch the tent yourself. The last thing you want to do on a Friday night after work is get stressed by fighting with an uncooperative tent.

Ease of pitching is a key feature in the design process of instant tents, including pitching an instant tent by one person. Smaller pop-up tents are easy for one person. Larger instant tents are perfectly achievable to put up by yourself. It may just take a bit of practice.

Check out the Core 9-Person Instant Cabin Tent. A large tent with telescopic poles pre-attached to the tent so that your tent simply pops up.

Are Pop-Up Tents Easy To Use?

What is an instant tent? We know we open a bag, and the tent pops into shape. Pop-up tents have become increasingly popular over the last decade. The need for something to pitch quickly and easily has increased demand. Pop-up tents can be cheap, which has aided their popularity. Not everyone wants to invest in an expensive tent when they only want it for the summer festival season.

A Brief History of Instant Tents

Instant tents are not as new an invention as we might initially think. They were invented in 1955 by Bill Moss, a fabric designer. Bill Moss was disgruntled with bulky tents that were difficult to pitch and often smelly. So he designed the first pop-up tent, which has helped to revolutionise how many people experience the great outdoors. So much so that MSR’s tent designer worked with Moss tents before joining MSR tents. MSR still follow much of the philosophies which they gleaned from Bill Moss.

Since then, other companies have listened to campers who longed for a quicker and easier-pitched tent. Quechua was one of those companies that took on board the wishes of campers. In 2004, they launched the first double-skinned tent with a bedroom that was able to be pitched in two seconds. This was considered a remarkable achievement which rapidly became a success for many outdoor enthusiasts. Particularly festival goers, who did not want to faff around with pitching a tent.

However, as easy as the 2-second tent was to pitch, it was a pain to stow away into its bag. Recognising this issue, Decathlon, whose brand Quechua belongs, came up with valuable tips on folding away a pop-up tent.

Is an Instant Tent Right for Me?

Now you know what is an instant tent. Is it the right tent for you? Choosing a tent can be so confusing these days. Today, there is a wide variety of tents on the market. Some things to consider when buying a tent include.

  • How you will use the tent
  • The size
  • The season
  • Different materials and poles
  • Price

Well, My Green Tent has put together a list of pros and cons for instant tents to help you decide if an instant tent is suitable for your purpose.

should i get an instant tent

Pros

  • One of the most significant advantages of Instant tents is they are speedy and easy to assemble. We have already read about the 2-second Quechua tent. Other instant tents, even large tents, are pitched in under a minute. In this category, instant tents are probably unbeatable.
  • Instant tents are quick to take down. Once you have followed the guidelines and discovered the knack, they are simple and fast to stow away.
  • Make great beginner tents. The ease of pitching and stowing away means beginners do not start their camping adventure on a steep learning curve in figuring out how to put up a tent. Instead, they get straight to the joys of camping.
  • Pop-up tents are safer and much easier for children to learn how to pop up an instant tent. Pop-ups are safer because the tent poles are pre-attached. Handling tent poles can be difficult, especially if the weather takes a turn for the worse. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission states that 800 injuries are involved in the assembly and disassembly of tents, including children.
  • Budget Friendly. You can buy a cheap pop-up tent, which might be suitable if you want to try camping for the first time or if you know you will only use it for a season. You might even want a tent simply for shade at the beach.
  • They are helpful for campers with health conditions because they are easy to assemble. Not all instant tents have a flap at the bottom which can be a trip hazard for the less agile. Larger instant tents could even be wheelchair friendly, as some have a wide entrance.

Cons

  • They are not the most waterproof of tents. If you know you will be camping in the rain, it might be best to take extra weather protection, like a tarp or a rainfly. This means you must take guy ropes, tent pegs and possibly a mallet. All this equipment is extra gear for an instant tent. However, some of this is the equipment you would have with you if you had a standard tent.
  • Condensation can be a problem. Some instant tents are single-wall, which means they do not have a rainfly. If you are unsure what, a rainfly is, check out What is a rainfly?. The fabric is water-resistant, not always the best for breathability, and lacks ventilation, creating condensation.
what is a instant tent
  • Bulky when packed. Instant tents must fold in a particular way when stowed in their bags. A standard tent is rolled or stuffed, whichever method you find more manageable and space-saving when stored. Storage bags for instant tents will be bulkier, making them awkward to carry.
  • Difficult to Repair. Instant tents are not easy to repair. The availability of parts is practically nil. Getting to the broken piece can be difficult if you find a replacement part. Due to the instant tent being an all-in-one piece, seams are sewn or glued, making it not practical to repair.
  • Pop-up tents do not have a porch, making it challenging to store boots and a place to prepare food.

How Do You Use A Coleman Instant Tent?

Coleman has an assortment of instant tents ranging from the Coleman 2-person pop-up tent, which sets up in under 10-seconds. It is as simple as opening the bag, releasing the tent, and it simply pops open.

Packing away the tent is easy when you know how and should take less than one minute.

  1. Gather the sides of the tent towards the centre while it is still in the pitched position.
  2. Holding the sides together firmly, turn the tent into the upright position.
  3. Fold the tent downwards and inwards without twisting the tent. You need to end up with three rings on top of each other to form one single ring.
  4. Secure the folded tent with the attached strap.
  5. Finally, slide the tent into the bag.

Skylodge 10-Person Instant Camping Tent With Screen Room

This tent, made by Coleman, sizewise, is on the opposite scale of the smaller 2-person pop-up tent. However, it is still easily and quickly assembled using telescopic pre-attached poles.

Coleman has improved how to disassemble the large instant tent, making the process easier. The tent is now rolled and stowed into its generous-sized stuff sack.

What Is The Easiest Pop-Up Tent?

What is an instant tent, and which is the easiest tent to pop up? Instant tents like standard tents are improving all the time.

One such tent is the award-winning Quechua 2-Seconds Easy. Quechua has addressed some of the key criticisms of their tents.

  • The tent is incredibly easy to set up and quick and straightforward to fold by pressing two push buttons.
  • The fabric is more durable and can withstand winds up to 30 mp/h
  • The roof has a double-skinned construction, reducing condensation.
  • Detached pieces are available as parts for five years, so it will now be possible to repair the tent in some circumstances.

Final Thoughts

In answering the question, ‘What is an instant tent?’ We have discovered they are appealing in so many different ways.

  • They are quick to set up.
  • Straightforward to assemble solo, including the larger 9-person tents.
  • Instant tents are easy to use.
  • They do have advantages and disadvantages compared to standard tents.

Instant tents come in all shapes, sizes and budgets, so if you decide the convenience of a quickly assembled tent is the right type, you are sure to find one which suits you.

Moreover, we love the greenery here. It has a wide variety of vegetation, including sagebrush, Gambel oak, and Utah serviceberry. You can also see the magnificent and towering West Elk Mountains from here. Perhaps the only thing it lacks is the view of the canyon.

For a longer journey, combine it with Oak Flat Loop Trail and Rim Rock Trail. Another easy trail for beginners is the Cedar Point Nature Trail.

Rim Rock Nature Trail

Location: Borders the Campground Loop C entrance and continues till South Rim Visitor Center

Length: 2-miles

To walk along the canyon while hiking, embark on Rim Rock Nature Trail. It takes you along its exhilarating edge. You can also gaze at the captivating sight of the Gunnison River slowly flowing to its narrow trajectory.

Moreover, there are numerous beautiful and mesmerizing plants. These include pinyon pine, Utah juniper, sagebrush, Gambel oak, etc. You might even observe wildlife such as mountain lions or bobcats.

If you prefer a longer trail, we recommend starting from Oak Flat lands and moving towards the Uplands Trail junction. This merges into Rim Rock Trail, which leads to South Rim Visitor Center. Another option for a moderate hiking trail is Warner Point Nature Trail.

Oak Flat Loop Trail

black canyon in winter

Location: Near the Visitor Center

Length: 2 miles

Generally considered the strenuous route, Oak Flat Loop Trail is an excellent choice if you love challenges. It gets narrow in some places. So, we wouldn’t recommend it for beginners. It is also worth noting that this trail requires a permit if you plan on trekking.

It is one of the steep and elevated trails in Black Canyon National Park. So, we recommend taking a hiking stick to maintain balance. You can also start at the right side of the loop if you don’t feel comfortable on the edge side.

Moreover, this trail is one of the best for its variety of wildlife and flowers. You can witness animals such as deer and bunny rabbits. Moreover, aspens grow here as well.

As you enter the Black Canyon’s designated Wilderness Areas, you can see the beautiful Gambel Oak flowering despite the icy weather. Moreover, if you head west from here, you pass through a forest of chokecherry and Douglas fir. We highly recommend it if you love vibrance and greenery.

Camping

Camping is one of our favorite outdoor activities in Black Canyon National Park in winter. However, only the South Rim Campground Loop A is open during wintertime. That is because of safety precautions during the snow.

Also, if you’re planning on backcountry camping with your peers, it is worth mentioning that it is only allowed at Pulpit Rock Overlook. You would also require a wilderness permit for this.

You should also be aware that there are no water facilities in the Black Canyon National Park in winter. Bring 4 quarts of water per person for daily use. You can fill water from a clean stream in case you run out.

Explore the Depth of the Inner Canyon

If you have the necessary experience and skill, do not forget to explore the magnificence of the inner Canyon. You would need a Wilderness Permit for this. You can easily get one from the Visitor Center.

It is also worth noting that we do not recommend it for beginners or people who lack the necessary expertise. The Inner Canyon is a remote location. That means rescue operations are hard to carry out. You need to bring all the required equipment with you.

Apart from the travel essentials, do not forget to bring high-energy food. Moreover, we also advise bringing a flashlight with extra batteries, just in case you need help looking around.

Ranger Programs

what to do in back canyon in winter

Each winter, depending on snow conditions, rangers guide through the process of snowshoeing. You can bring your snowshoes, but they’re also available for purchase at the park. We highly recommend this program for beginners. You do not need any special skills to participate in it.

Moreover, you will be given directions by rangers. So, you don’t have to worry about your lack of expertise.

Stargazing

Black Canyon National Park is a Dark Sky Park. That means that the stars are visible clearly in the night sky. It is truly a mesmerizing sight to behold. If you love the tranquility of staring at these mighty heavenly bodies suspended in the sky, you do not want to miss out on Black Canyon.

However, check the weather conditions and relevant information from the Visitors Center beforehand.

Black Canyon Travel Essentials:

  1. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good soles as the snow can be slippery.
  1. Bring a good water bottle when traveling. The water facilities are closed during winters. Drink ample amounts of water. You do not want to be dehydrated.
  1. Bring a good hiking stick if you plan on trekking. It can come in handy for maintaining balance.
  1. If you plan on hiking in the snow, bring snowshoes. They’ll also be available on-site, so do not worry if you lack the space for them in your luggage. We recommend the Retrospec Drifter Snowshoes for their excellent traction.
  1. It is advisable to bring bear spray for safety. We recommend the Mace Brand Bear Spray due to its ease of use.
  1. A First Aid Kit is necessary. An injury can occur on your trip, so it is best to stay prepared.
  1. There are no signals available. Better bring a map or compass in case you get lost.
  1. Sun protection is important. Wear sunscreen.
  1. Bring a water filter in case you run out of water. They will allow you to fill up from the river. We recommend the Sawyer Filtration System due to its lightweight design.

What Is the Best Time of Year To Visit Black Canyon National Park?

Summer is generally considered to be the best time of the year to visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. That is because the weather is warmer and more tolerable during this time. The north entrance is also open, so there’s more to explore in comparison.

However, you will need to pay the entrance fee in summer, unlike in winter. The permits for Wilderness Areas can be also harder to obtain as they are limited and often given on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis.

Key Takeaways

One’s preferences are subjective. We, therefore, have a less ‘fixed’ approach on the best time to visit Black Canyon National Park.

Apart from the obvious weather-related likes and dislikes, we often ask our viewers this:

Do you want to spend time alone? Or do you enjoy the company of fellow travelers?

If you like your solitude, Black Canyon National Park in winter will be perfect for you. If not, you can traverse this mesmerizing landscape in the summer. The weather will be warmer, and you can explore a more expansive area.

Whichever month you decide to arrive here, do not forget the travel essentials. And enjoy! It will be one of the most beautiful places you’ve ever visited.

Whether it’s dirt, mold, or just a bad smell, there are many reasons you may want to wash your tent. So what’s the best way to get it clean? Can you wash a tent in the washing machine? What are the other options for getting your tent clean? And what about drying your tent? These are just a few questions that are important to answer if you want your tent to last for many more camping trips to come!

Can you put a tent in the washing machine?

Returning home from an excessively dirty camping trip may make you want to clean your tent. So the question is, can you wash a tent in the washing machine? Surely this would be the easiest way to clean it. Just throw it in your washer with the dirty linen from your trip and set it on the gentle cycle and it’s as good as new, right? Unfortunately, this is not the case. A washing machine should never be used to wash a tent!

The same things that are desired in a good tent: breathability, lightweight and waterproof, are the tent’s downfall in a washing machine. Even on a washing machine’s gentle cycle, the fabric, coatings, seam taping, and mesh all have a high chance of being damaged. These simple lightweight materials are no match for being sloshed around in a stainless steel cylinder with soapy, hot water and an agitator.

Fabric:

Tents are designed with fabrics that all have one key component, portability. Nylon, Polyester, and Cuben Fiber are no match for the agitator in your washing machine. Machine washing will most likely lead to stretching or tearing of these fabrics.

Seams:

The seams of the tent, often called “seam taping”, are responsible for covering the small holes that were created while sewing up the different layers of the tent. If this taping is damaged or comes off in the washing machine, the tent will no longer be waterproof!

Mesh:

The mesh’s primary purpose is breathability. These are often the most fragile parts of the tent! This means they are susceptible to rips and tears which will allow easier access to insects and bugs.

Coating:

Upon purchase, your tent is already sprayed with a special coating. This coating plays an active role in the tent’s waterproofing. The rubbing your tent experiences inside the washing machine will quickly wear away sections of this coating. This breach allows the tent to soak up water during the next rainfall; transferring it into your tent.

With all of these factors, you can see why limiting any type of “washing” of your tent is important. Each wash, regardless of how gentle it may seem, will slowly weaken the integrity of the tent.

Take a minute to check out our article on the safety of sleeping in a moldy tent.

How do you wash your tent?

When your tent becomes too smelly, or muddy or the zippers stop functioning it will require a thorough cleaning. Now that we know the answer to the question, “Can you wash a tent in the washing machine?”, we focus on how to properly wash your tent. The best way to clean your tent will depend on the type of tent you own and the amount of cleaning that is required.

The first step before washing the tent is to prepare it for cleaning. Bring the tent outside and into a location with enough space to stretch it out. Start by unzipping all the doors and windows and then turn the tent inside out. Give the tent a gentle shake to remove all loose debris, paying special attention to the tent corners. The next step is to start washing. Three options work best for cleaning tents depending on the degree of cleaning required and the material of the tent.

Hose down Method

A tent made from synthetic material such as nylon or polyester is traditionally very easy to keep clean. The hosing method also works if your tent needs a gentle rinse. Begin by grabbing a hose and a microfiber cloth. While paying special attention to the water pressure, begin hosing down the tent to remove the accumulated dirt and dust. Use the microfiber cloth when required to facilitate the gentle removal of any persistent debris. I recommend using no attachment for the hose and not focusing the water in one place for too long.

how to clean your tent without using a washing machine

Bucket and Sponge Method

This is the better option for muddy and moldy tents. First, start by selecting a container that is large enough to accommodate your tent with extra room. This will help limit the amount of rubbing that the fabric will experience. I suggest using a bathtub or utility sink, but a large bucket will most certainly work in a pinch. Next, select a cleaner specifically designed for washing tents or a very mild detergent such as baby soap. Never use abrasive or harsh cleaning products on your tent such as bleach, laundry pre-soaking products, or spot removers. These types of cleaners can strip away the weatherproofing from your tent and potentially wear down its fabric. A soft sponger and/or a microfiber cloth are also needed.

Begin by filling up the tub or container with cool to lukewarm water and add in the appropriate amount of cleaner. Slowly immerse your tent, which is still inside out, as well as your rainfly into the container of water. Ensure the washing solution reaches all corners of the tent by kneading and pushing down on the tent until all of the tent is saturated.

After letting the gear soak in the mixture you can use the soft sponge to gently massage away any stains or caked-on grime. Resist the urge to scrub deeply as this will wear down the fabric. When either the water is too dirty or you have successfully cleaned the tent you can let the water drain away. Give the tent a gentle hose off to ensure that all of the soap has been removed from the tent’s fabric. You may need to repeat this process multiple times depending on the severity of the stains, smells, or how dirty your tent was to begin with! Check out a helpful video here!

Steam Cleaning Method

If you have a canvas tent that is experiencing problems with mold or bacteria, then this is your best option. A steam cleaner will help loosen stains and dirt from the cotton so that it can be removed with a rag or sponge. There are even steam cleaner models that operate at a lower temperature. This decreases the chance of damage or shrinkage to your tent’s canvas! I recommend purchasing a machine that also has a built-in vacuum mode to help with the removal of dirt and dust from the canvas while steaming.

Can I put a tent in the dryer?

Now that you have successfully washed your tent, the next step is drying your tent. Drying a tent completely and thoroughly is an essential step in preventing the growth of mold and mildew. Is there a quick method to dry your tent? We have answered the question: “Can you wash a tent in the washing machine?”, but can a dryer be used for the next step?

Can I put a tent in the dryer

The short answer to that question is no, never machine dry a tent! The high temperatures of a dryer will most assuredly cause heat damage to your tent’s fabrics. Even on a gentle cycle, with as low of a temperature as possible, the tent will still be rubbing against itself and the drum for the entire process. This causes unwanted wear.

How do you dry a tent?

The best way to dry a tent is to let it air dry. In fact, air drying your tent is just about the only way to dry it without damaging it. And the good thing is that there is no such thing as too much drying time!

For obvious reasons, the best place to dry your tent is outside. Save yourself the mess of your tent drip drying in the middle of your living room by taking it outdoors. The fresh air outside will also help dry the fabric faster than indoors. The only thing left is to decide on which of the two basic methods to dry your tent is right for you.

Pitch-Dry Method

The most obvious method for drying out your tent, and also the easiest, is to pitch your tent outdoors and allow it to air dry. Select a shaded outdoor spot that is out of the way. You simply set up the tent and allow it to dry out for several hours. This method is extremely effective for synthetic tents especially if it’s a windier day!

If you have a canvas tent, the “pitch-dry” method will also work but at a slower speed. Canvas tents are made from cotton which tends to hold water to a higher degree. This means that the entire process will most likely take two to three times longer than a synthetic tent.

Hang Dry Method

how do you dry a tent

The next best method for drying your tent is to hang dry it. Don’t have the space, or motivation to pitch your tent? Hang it up in a windy area. If you hang it in the sun, be sure that your tent is UV protected to avoid any unnecessary damage to the tent. If hanging your tent, check the surroundings to make sure that the tent will not rub or flap onto any surface causing unwanted wear and tear.

Signs you need to wash your tent

If you have ever wondered when or how often to wash your tent you will be disappointed to find that there’s no set rule. In fact, you should really try to minimize the amount of washing that you do to your tent! Sure you can dust it off, gently hose it down and spot clean if required, but other than that it should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Of course, the cleaning criteria for your tent will largely depend on you, the fabric of your tent, your camping style, and how dirty the tent is after your camping adventure.

So what are the signs that mean you need to actually take the risk and wash your tent? Your tent will attract and collect random stains, dirt and dust, and possibly even a few foul smells over the years. These are not enough of a hindrance to warrant a washing. Instead, appropriate signs of washing should include foul smells that may be the result of a mold or mildew problem, copious amounts of mud smeared all over the tent, or improper zipper function. Again, this is your call and depends upon what you deem reasonable enough to wash your tent. Just remember the more you wash your tent, the quicker you will have to look for its replacement!

How To Best Care For Your Tent

Instead of regular washings, what I suggest is that you do a quick general cleaning at the end of every usage. This will help increase the lifespan of your tent by reducing the required amount of washing. General cleaning can be accomplished through a few very simple steps.

  1. Clear out everything from inside your tent before putting it away. This will prevent damage from any objects left inside the tent while packing it away.
  1. Clean out any sand, dirt, leaves, or other debris from inside your tent. Use either a small broom and dustpan or simply shake out the tent.
  1. Examine the bottom of the tent and try to remove any dirt, sap, or sticks that are caked on. Obviously, this will most likely be the dirtiest part of the tent and will help keep your tent clean when it is rolled up.
  1. When folding up the tent, try to keep the bottom from touching other parts of the tent. This will keep the rest of the tent clean when it’s all rolled up.

If your tent is well taken care of with these simple steps you may be able to go a couple years between thorough washings!

Final Thoughts

After a long exciting trip, don’t be foolish enough to throw your tent in the washing machine. When someone asks, “can you wash a tent in the washing machine?”, your answer should be a resounding NO! This will damage the tent’s fabric, mesh, seams, and coating. Instead, opt to either wash the tent outside with a hose or inside your bathtub with a very soft sponge! Just make sure you use the correct detergent and use gentle motions to avoid damaging the tent!

Try to limit the number of washings that you give your tent. They are designed to be used when a little dirty. Instead, try to include regular cleanings after each excursion. Minimizing the times you wash your tent and allowing it to dry properly before storage will greatly increase your tent’s lifespan! Follow the steps included in this article and your tent will last for many more adventures to come! Happy camping!

As for shorter trails, the 2.2-mile Grapevine Hills Trail is a good option. You can walk through the various varieties of scrubs and cactus along its route.

The River:

If you have ever wondered what gazing at 1500-foot limestone walls feels like at the end of the trek, we have another option for you. The Santa Elena trail starts at Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and follows the Rio Grande. It is a 1.7-mile trail that takes you to the tallest gorge in the park. That is when you see the ultimate view: the awe-inspiring limestone walls.

By placing your compass over your current location on your map, you will have a better idea of which direction you need to go to get to where you are going. Then, rotate your compass so that the direction of the travel arrow aims at the top of the map.

If you are unsure of your location, you should place your compass on a landmark you have recently passed. Ensure that the directional arrow still faces at the top of the map. Then, follow the steps below to correctly place your compass on the map.

Directions for orienting your compass to your map:

  1. Lay your map and compass on a horizontal surface, so the compass is parallel with the ground.
